Fines for Cycling Offences

PSA Yokohama
2026/07/08

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

8th July 2026

This week’s edition is on fines for cycling offences.

On April 1st, fines were introduced for traffic violations committed whilst cycling.

Anyone aged 16 or over who commits traffic violations, such as ignoring traffic lights, or engages in dangerous behavior while cycling will be subject to a fine, regardless of whether they hold a driving license.

In particular, if you continue to violate traffic rules despite instructions or warnings from a police officer, or you engage in dangerous behaviour such as using a mobile phone whilst cycling, you may be required to pay a fine of up to 12,000 yen.

No changes have been made to the traffic rules for cyclists.

As a general rule, cyclists must ride on the left-hand side of the road.

You should also wear a helmet to protect your head.

Obeying the traffic rules helps protect precious lives.

Please take this opportunity to review the traffic rules and etiquette for cyclists, and strive safe, accident-free cycling.
