Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
1st July 2026
This week's edition is on heatstroke countermeasures and prevention.
Heatstroke is common in July and August.
In order to prevent getting heatstroke, please follow these four pointers:
1. Ensuring regular fluid intake
Drink fluids even if you do not feel thirsty.
2. Wearing appropriate clothing
Loosen your collar and wear breathable clothing.
3. Avoiding the heat
Keep rooms well ventilated and control the temperature using air conditioners etc.
4. Maintaining good health on a daily basis
Get into the habit of doing short bursts of light exercise, and work up a sweat with moderate exercise. However, don’t push yourself if you’re not feeling well.
Early symptoms of heatstroke include dizziness or lightheadedness even if clearly conscious, and numbness in the hands and feet. Please seek shelter in a cool place immediately, loosen clothing to cool the body, and replenish fluids and salt.
About half of all heatstroke patients are senior citizens aged 65 or older.
Older people are less able to sense that they are hot or lacking fluids, and their thermoregulatory functions do not perform as well. There are many cases of heatstroke indoors, so check the temperature and humidity of the room frequently and use air conditioning even if you don't feel hot.
Please also pay attention to the well-being of those who find it difficult to express that they are feeling unwell, such as young children and people with disabilities.
