Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
24th September 2025
This week's edition is on Sankeien’s moon-viewing event.
Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku. It was created in the early 1900s, over a period of 20 years, by Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune in the manufacturing and export of silk.
Inside the extensive garden, there are 17 historical buildings, gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura. Visitors can enjoy seeing how they blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery.
For five days from Friday 3rd - Tuesday 7th October, Sankeien will extend its opening hours until 9pm to hold a Moon Viewing event, a traditional Japanese event for enjoying the moon.
During this period, visitors will be able to admire the illuminated historic buildings whilst strolling through the garden.
For just the admission fee, visitors will also be able to enjoy traditional Japanese music and dance, such as a Koto and Shakuhachi ensemble, and “Gagaku”, Japanese dance, and “Satsuma-Biwa (lute)” performances, as well as a saxophone and piano performance.
The performances will change daily, but will all be held in Rinshunkaku, a building that dates back to the Edo period, around 400 years ago.
On autumn evenings, when the heat eases, forget about your daily routine and enjoy a moment in this atmospheric setting.
