Sankeien’s Early Morning Lotus Viewing Event

PSA Yokohama
2025/07/30

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

30th July 2025

This week's edition is on the early morning lotus viewing event at Sankeien.

Sankeien is a Japanese garden located in Yokohama's Honmoku. It was created in the early 1900s, over a period of 20 years, by Sankei Hara, a businessman who made his fortune in the manufacturing and export of silk.

Inside the extensive garden, there are 17 historical buildings, gathered from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura. Visitors can enjoy seeing how they blend in seamlessly with the natural scenery.

The lotus was particularly loved by Sankeien’s founder, Hara Sankei, as a flower of high virtue because its pure flowers bloom out of mud.

The ‘Early Morning Lotus Viewing’ event, where visitors can enjoy the pink flowers blooming in a 1,700㎡ lotus pond, is being held on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and national holidays, between 19th July and 11th August.

During this period, the garden will open from 7:00am to coincide with the lotus flowers, which start blooming early in the morning and close around midday.

Teahouse limited breakfast menus will be available, as well as the “Lotus Experience Corner”, a free hands-on event for children.

An art workshop “Making Fans with Lotus Leaves”, where visitors can paste and colour real lotus leaves, will also be held, for four days during the event period.

Enjoy some summer fun for children and adults alike, while getting in touch with nature at Sankeien, a garden that preserves traditional Japanese culture.

Some events require advance reservation to participate.

For details, please see the Sankeien homepage.

Lotus viewing can be enjoyed for just the entrance fee.
