History of Japanese animation for girls

PSA Yokohama
2025/06/18

Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City

18th June 2025

This week’s edition is on the Yokohama Doll Museum’s ‘History of Japanese animation for girls’ exhibition.

The exhibition introduces the 60-year history of ‘Magical Girls’ and is being held at Yokohama Doll House, a three-minute walk from Motomachi-Chukagai Station.

Under the theme, ‘Magical Girls’, which established itself as a major genre in Japanese animation, the exhibition takes a look back, with toys, figurines, and dolls, at how the characters encouraged viewers in different eras and influenced society.

Magical girls all have in common the elements of using magic and transforming, and have always fascinated children as ‘girl superheroes’ who fight against great enemies.

The protagonists of each era have pursued the theme of "living true to themselves" in difficult circumstances.

The exhibition is imbued with the hope that stories of ‘magical girls’ and ‘girl superheroes’ will continue to inspire people in the future.

Please take a look back at the history of the genre with the exhibits.

There is also a photo spot in the exhibition room, with a magic wand always available in the room so you can feel as if you’ve transformed into a magical girl. Please come dressed up in style!

Limited edition goods, featuring "Magical Angel Creamy Mami" illustrations that were drawn especially for this exhibition, are also on sale at the museum shop inside the facility.

The Yokohama Doll Museum’s ‘History of Japanese animation for girls’ exhibition will run until 29th June.
