Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
21st May 2025
This week’s edition is on Yokohama History Museum’s 30th anniversary special exhibition.
To commemorate its 30th anniversary, Yokohama History Museum is holding a special exhibition until July 27th.
Since its opening, Yokohama History Museum has researched the historical, artistic, and cultural value of cultural properties in the Yokohama area and promoted the results of its research through exhibitions and other activities.
At the same time, the museum has also been involved in preservation activities with local residents to protect or restore cultural properties themselves and pass them on to future generations in an appropriate environment.
This exhibition will show these activities to date in two parts: Part 1 "Restoration" and Part 2 "Transmission." Part 1 "Restoration" will introduce cultural property restoration techniques and the people involved, while Part 2 "Transmission" will introduce the environment and region in which cultural properties are passed on, based on documents.
Part 1 will be held until 2nd June. In addition to the first public display after repair of Buddhist statues, hanging scrolls, and paintings, there will also be clay figurines and haniwa clay figures that have returned to Yokohama from the Tokyo National Museum.
Part 2 will be held from 14th June to 27th July. On 25th June and 2nd July, there will be a walking tour of Yokohama's historical sites, carefully selected by the director of the Yokohama History Museum, and on July 5th, the director will hold a lecture in which he will talk in detail about these historical sites. During each session, curators in charge of history, archaeology, folklore, and art will give a one-point explanation of the exhibits.
