Public Service Announcement for Yokohama City
16th April 2025
This week’s edition is on the “Grand Sumo Jungyo Tour in YOKOHAMA ARENA”.
When we think of sumo, most people think of the “Honbasho” tournament, where rikishi (wrestlers) clash in the ring for 15 days, but this “Yokohama Arena Tournament” is positioned as a one-day “jungyo” tour.
Let's take a look at how to enjoy the tour by following the flow of the day.
Firstly, in the morning, you can observe the public training session of participating rikishi. This is a great opportunity to see up-close how the wrestlers, from young rikishi to ozeki and yokozuna, practice…something you don't usually get to see.
In the afternoon, one of the great attractions is the content that is unique to the jungyo tour. This includes events such as "shokkiri," which humorously introduces illegal sumo moves in the form of a comedy skit, and "sumo jinku (folk songs)," where rikishi show off their beautiful voices with creative lyrics.
The makuuchi rikishi then enter the ring, wearing kesho-mawashi, followed finally by the culmination of sumo beauty, the "yokozunas’ ring entrance ceremony."
This is the followed by powerful bouts between the makuuchi rikishi and the excitement in the arena reaches its peak in the final bout.
Finally, the day concludes with the Yumitori-shiki (bow twirling ceremony), which brings the tour to a close.
The “Grand Sumo Jungyo Tour in YOKOHAMA ARENA” will be held at Yokohama Arena on Saturday 26th April.
